Spring Break: Day Nine

Students,

I hope you enjoyed your break.  Today is the last day of the break and hopefully you have reenergized for the final stretch of the school year.  The past few days I have been eager to get back to school; too many days off are difficult for me.

Below are videos you may have seen before, but hopefully they are a reminder of what is possible in the upcoming weeks.

In relentless pursuit of excellence,

Mr. Giomini

Spring Break: Day Four

Students,

Today I stopped into school for a quick minute to work on some items for our next topic once the Part Eight - Volume and Surface Area posttest is completed.  After that, I headed to Philadelphia to watch the Rex Sox blast the Phillies 8 - 0 thanks to five homeruns by three Red Sox batters:
Pedroia (2), Ramirez (2), and Betts (1).

Even with all of that, I had time to knock out 20 minutes on Khan Academy.

In relentless pursuit of excellence,

Mr. Giomini

Spring Break: Day Three

Students,

Today I spent some time on Khan again; I am now up to 91% of 7th grade mastered.  I still have seven skills not practiced yet which I hope to work on once I publish this post.

Earlier today I went back in time, thanks to Dr. Brown, to watch Kelly McGarry ride his mountain bike which was cool.

In relentless pursuit of excellence,

Mr. Giomini

Spring Break: Day Two

Students,

Today was a relaxing day.  Spent about 40 minutes on Khan and have only seven more skills to practice in 7th Grade.  Upped my overall percent mastered to 89% which needs to improve.  Did some base jumping with Mr. Hartwell.

In relentless pursuit of excellence,

Mr. Giomini

Spring Break: Day One

Students,

I spent today working on 7th Grade Khan skills for about 30 minutes in an attempt to catch Alejandro, raking out my front lawn, and doing some hang gliding.  My hang gliding name is Flo Orley; just sounds cooler than Scott Giomini.

In relentless pursuit of excellence,

Mr. Giomini

In Math Six, students had shortened class periods.  Mr. Giomini had the students complete a Socrative quiz based on an article from Scholastic Math magazine.

                                          1. find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100.
                                          2. solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.

                                          Day of Improvement: 02.20.15

                                          Students,

By now you know that we are not having school today.  This means the responsibility of getting better today falls in your lap.  As I mentioned yesterday, there are several resources that you can utilize in an attempt to better yourself.  Choose a resource or multiple resources to improve your skills today.

                                          In relentless pursuit of excellence,

                                          Mr. Giomini

                                          Day of Improvement: 02.19.15

                                          Students,

Due to the wind chill, school is cancelled.  However, even with school not being open, use today to improve your math skills with some meaningful practice.  Obviously you can use Khan for a few minutes.   Maybe you have your old packets from previous chapters that you can review.  There are several pretests posted to the blog along with answer keys that can help solidify previous skills.  Or, maybe you want to begin your Expert in a Year quest.  I look forward to hearing what you did with your time when I see you again of Friday.

                                          In relentless pursuit of excellence,

                                          Mr. Giomini

                                          Class Topics: 02.18.15

In Math Six, students had shortened class periods.  Mr. Giomini discussed the performance based task, "How Hot Is It?" in greater depth and provided class time for the students to work on the task both independently and with a colleague.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
                                          1. use substitution to determine the solution to an equation.
                                          2. display numerical data.
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete...
                                          1. pages four and five from Math 6 Practice packet.
                                          2. "How Hot Is It?" performance based task due on Monday, February 23.
                                          3. 15 minutes of meaningful practice on Khan Academy.
I wonder if this type of dedication
would work in other aspects of life?

In Math Six today, Mr. Giomini introduced the next performance based task, "How Hot Is It?" to the students.  Ten minutes of class time was allotted for the students to begin the task.

Once time expired for the performance based task, Mr. Giomini reviewed exponents with the students.   What exponents represent and how they are simplified was discussed and modeled.  The two Khan Skills for this evening were modeled prior to the students beginning an independent task to close out class.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...

To help with weekend practice, Mr. Giomini allowed the students the remaining time to begin their purposeful practice on Khan Academy.
