Day 18: Math 6 - Rational Numbers on a Number Line / Math 6+: Algebraic Expressions

Students in Math 6 continued their work with integers, rational numbers, and number lines today. The emphasis for Lesson 2.1 was to begin to arrange positive and negative fractions and decimals on a number line. There needed to be an understanding of using inequality symbols as well to compare two or more rational numbers.

Math 6+ students continued their work with evaluating algebraic expressions. The main focus today was on translating word phrases into algebraic expressions.

Socrative 6+  Class Name = GIO606 (This is not case sensitive. Use only your last name when entering your name.)

Standards addressed in today's lesson:
  • Math 6:
    • Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
    • Write, interpret, and explain statements of order for rational numbers in real-world contexts. For example, write -3 oC > -7 oC to express the fact that -3 oC is warmer than -7 oC.
  • Math 6+:
    • Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.
    • Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For example, express the calculation "Subtract y from 5" as 5 - y.
