Day 19: Math 6 - Absolute Value / Math 6+ - Writing Algebraic Expressions

Students in Math 6 worked with Lesson 2.3: Absolute Value. Our early work with integers was comparing them; absolute value described the positive distance that a number is away from zero. This was used to compare distances, amount of debt, arranging different data sets.

Math 6+ students continued their work from Friday with translating word phrases into algebraic expressions.

Standards addressed in today's lesson:
  • Math 6:
    • Understand ordering and the absolute value of rational numbers.
  • Math 6+:
    • Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For example, express the calculation "Subtract y from 5" as 5 - y.
    • Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, coefficient); view one or more parts of an expression as a single entity. For example, describe the expression 2 (8 + 7) as a product of two factors; view (8 + 7) as both a single entity and a sum of two terms.
