Day 17: Integers / One and Two-Step Equations

Students in Math 6 began Topic Two: Integers and Rational Numbers. In this lesson students discussed counting numbers and their opposites, integers, as well as plotting integers on a number line. We finally applied integers to scenarios such as depths below sea level and the elevation of a mountain.  To conclude the lesson, students completed the Lesson 2.1 online quiz.

Math 6+ students worked with evaluating algebraic expressions. Mr. Giomini introduced coefficients, variables, and exponents to the students. Once that was done, students completed a Kahoot! dealing with evaluating algebraic expressions. We will progress to incorporating integers along with positive and negative fractions and decimals.

Evening Practice 6+

Standards addressed in class today:
  • Math 6:
    • Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
    • Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., -(-3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite.
  • Math 6+:
    • Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.
    • Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For example, express the calculation "Subtract y from 5" as 5 - y.
