Day 107: Area of Polygons

Today in Math 6 and Math 6+, students worked with calculating the area of polygons. The focus today was on being able to visualize different shapes within one polygon. Decomposing, breaking down, one polygon into different polygons, helps students calculate different areas and then either combine all the areas into one, or subtract to determine the area of a specific region of the original polygon.

Lesson Objective(s):
  • Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes.
  • Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
