Day 119: Appropriate Measures of Center and Variability / Constant Speed / Scatter Plots

Today in Math 6, students in 1 and received their Graphical Representation quiz from Friday. Mr. Giomini displayed the results using a box-and-whisker plot and posed questions to students regarding information that could and could not be found looking at the graphical representation.

Students then worked in pairs to complete a task where they had to determine the most appropriate measures of center and variability to describe a given data set based on the context in which the data values were collected.

In , Math 6 students continued to work with unit rates.  With Lesson 10.5: Constant Speed, students built upon knowledge from previous units to explore another type of rate.  Today they learned that speed is a rate comparing units of distance to units of time.  Mr. Giomini attempted to blend problems like the ones they will solve in science classes using the formula d = rt (distance = rate x time).

During 7 °, students in Math 6+ received their Graphical Representation Quiz from Friday.  Some of the common mistakes were: not providing a title for the histogram, not labeling the x-and y-axis for the histogram, and incorrectly determining quartile 1 and 3 for the box-and-whisker plot which then made calculating the interquartile range incorrect.

Once mistakes were polished up and discussed, Mr. Giomini introduced scatter plots which have been worked with briefly in the past two weeks.  Today's focus was on determining a line of best fit as well as understanding the difference between the population and sample size.

Today's Learning Targets: The student will be able to...
  • understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. (2°)
  • use appropriate statistical measures to describe and summarize data sets. (1 & 3°)
  • display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plot, histograms, and box plots. (7°)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to...
  • 1 & 3° -
    • Complete page 807.
    • Have 75% of 6th Grade Khan Skills mastered by March 23rd.
  • 2° -
    • Complete page 498.
    • Have 75% of 6th Grade Khan Skills mastered by March 23rd.
  • 7° -
    • Complete handout from Mr. Giomini.
    • Have 50% of 7th Grade Khan Skills mastered by March 23rd.
  • All Classes: Complete at least 10 minutes of work on Khan Academy to help review old content, practice new material, or front-load future concepts.
