Day 110: Data Distribution / Ratios and Graphs / Data Distribution

Today in Math 6: 1 & 3°, students analyzed dot plots and discussed how the data was either: symmetrical (unimodal), skewed right, non-symmetric (bimodal), uniform, skewed left, or symmetric (bimodal).

Terms such as: gaps, outliers, and clusters were also discussed to help students better communicate how data is distributed in a graphical representation.

During Math 6 - 2°, students worked with Lesson 9.5 Ratios and Graphs.  In this lesson, students create a table of equivalent ratios and graph the pairs of values on a coordinate plane.  They then see that points can be connected to form a straight line.  The work prepares them to use graphs to represent proportional relationships in Grade 7.

Solving ratio problems with graph: In this example we'll plot points on the x and y axis to reflect the given ratios.

Math 6+ students were introduced to the different types of data distributions.  Students then randomly selected either symmetrical (unimodal), skewed right, non-symmetric (bimodal), uniform, skewed left, or symmetric (bimodal) and had to develop a survey question that they could pose to their peers in order to mirror the data distribution type they selected.  Graphs were made to determine whether they were successful.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plots pairs of values on a coordinate plane. (2°)
  2. describe any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the context in which the data were gathered. (1, 3, and 7°)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6(1&3°):
    • Review for Wednesday's posttest.
    • Work towards 75% mastery on Khan Academy (6th Grade)
  2. Math 6(2°):
    • Complete page 453 (3 and 4) and page 454 (5 and 8).
    • Work towards 75% mastery on Khan Academy (6th Grade)
  3. Math 6+:
    • Review for Wednesday's posttest.
    • Work towards 50% mastery on Khan Academy (7th Grade)
  4. All Classes: > 10 minutes meaningful practice at Khan Academy
