Day 95: Solving Equations Containing Percents / Solving Division Equations / Percent Change

Today in Math 6: 1 & 3°, students added a different algorithm to working with percents to their skill-set: writing equations.  Mr. Giomini modeled how to write equations given information in a story problem format: Sloths sleep an average of 16.5 hours per day.  Determine what percent of a 24-hour day 16.5 hours is using a proportion and equation.

During Math 6 - 2°, students worked with Topic 6.5: Solving Division Equations.  Today's activities blended procedural skill with application.  Students used their prior knowledge of solving one-step division problems to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Students in Math 6+ continued their work from last week with percent of change.  The percent of change is the amount, stated as a percent, that a number increases of decreases.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. use one-step equations to solve percent problems. (1&3°)
  2. fluently divide multi-digit numbers. (2°)
  3. solve real-world and mathematical problems by writing and solving equations. (2°)
  4. calculate percent increase and decrease.  (7°)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6(1&3°):
    • Complete numbers 10, 13, 19, 22, and 23 using the digital handout.  CLICK HERE
    • Work towards 75% mastery on Khan Academy (6th Grade)
  2. Math 6(2°):
    • Complete Independent Practice (6-10) on page 299.
    • Work towards 75% mastery on Khan Academy (6th Grade)
  3. Math 6+:
    • Complete numbers 23 - 26 using the digital handout.  CLICK HERE
    • Work towards 50% mastery on Khan Academy (7th Grade)
  4. All Classes: > 10 minutes meaningful practice at Khan Academy
