Day 48: Solving Equations with Decimals / Rational Numbers on a Number Line / Challenge Day

Today in Math 6: 1 & 3°, students completed a Quick Check dealing with adding and subtracting positive and negative decimals.  Mr. Giomini introduced solving equations with decimals.  Refer to the video below for additional support.

During Math 6 - 2°, students continued working with ordering rational numbers.  Groups of four students received an envelope with six cards that had an arrangement of integers, decimals, or fractions written on them.  The goal was for the students to correctly order the rational numbers from least to greatest.

Once the numbers were arranged, groups walked around the room to check on other's work.  Class then agreed or disagreed with their peer's work.

Students in Math 6+ completed a Challenge Day.  Students drew names for partners and were then assigned five word problems.  The goal was to get more problems correct than the competition. Results will be revealed tomorrow during 7°.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation. (1 & 3°)
  2. use a rational number as a point on a number line. (2°)
  3. understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values. (2°)
  4. recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line.  (2°)
  5. use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts. (2°)
  6. solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of mixed numbers of fractions by fractions.  (7°)
  7. fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers using the standard algorithm for each operation. (all classes)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6 - 1 & 3: Page 18
  2. Math 6 - 2°: Rational Numbers on a Number Line Quick Check
  3. Math 6+: Pages 21 (odd) and 22
  4. All Classes: > 10 minutes meaningful practice at Khan Academy
