Class Topics: 11.14.14

In Common Core Math Six today, class began by students completing three review questions from previous lessons in Chapter Four.  Lesson 4.12: Solving Equations Containing Fractions was introduced, modeled, and practiced as a class and independently.

A major focus during the lesson was writing algebraic equations from story problems to help students get a better understanding of how to translate the words in the problem into an algebraic equation on paper.  Mr. Giomini modeled how to use the LCM of the denominators in the fraction to convert all fractions into whole numbers in the equation.

Answer to 11.13.14 Question: The difference in the pool's water from 6:00 a.m. intl 5:00 p.m. is 1 13/30 feet.  To begin the day the height was 12 1/3 ft and by the end of the day it was at 10 9/10 ft. You don't need the 11 3/4 ft because it was the midday measurement.  I first see that the denominators are different meaning I needed to find their LCM which was 30.  12 1/3 became 12 10/30 and 10 9/10 became 10 27/30.  I had to rename 12 10/30 to 11 40/30 to be able to subtract 10 27/30 from it successfully.  The subtraction gave me an answer of 1 13/30 ft which is the difference between the water height at 6:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  • apply and extend previous knowledge understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.
  • understand solving an equation as a process.
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to...
  • complete page 40 and 41 in Chapter Four.
