During class, Mr. Giomini introduced Lesson 2.10: Equations and Their Solutions. This lesson is a precursor to Lessons 2.11 and 2.12 where we began to solve one-step equations. Students practiced with problems similar to the following where substitution and checking possible solutions were key concepts.
- Nancy has 94 baseball cards. This is 6 more than Jack has. The equation 94 = j + 6 can be used to represent the number of baseball cards. Does Jack have 88 or 93 baseball cards?
- Determine whether each number is a solution of 19 = x + 4. (5, 14, 15, 23)
Students completed numbers seven through sixteen from page 106 to practice the skill. They then collaborated with a colleague to compare and discuss answers.
- determine whether a number is a solution for an equation.
- understand solving an equation or inequality as a process of answering a question: which values from a specified set, if any, make the equation or inequality true.
- use substitution to determine whether a given number in a specified set makes an equation or inequality true.
- complete pages 34 and 36 in Chapter Two.
