Class Topics: 09.26.13

In Common Core Math Six today, students in 1, 3, and reviewed their evening practice from Lesson 2.7: Variables and Algebraic Expressions.  Mr. Giomini then introduced what has typically been one of the more difficult lessons, 2.8: Translate Words into Math.  This lesson utilized a table to help us create algebraic expressions from word phrases and story problems.
The length of a football field is 30 yards more than its width. Express the
length of the field in terms of its width w.

Emma and her three college friends, Bianca, Zoe, and Allison, are going to share the cost of a
3 bedroom apartment.  The cost of rent is n dollars.  What expression
can be written to tell you Emma's share?

Students in continued their work with prime factorization once they moved into Lesson 2.5: Greatest Common Factor.  Mr. Giomini modeled how to use the prime factors of two numbers to determine their greatest common factor (GCF).  During class, students worked in groups of three to complete examples that Mr. Giomini posted to the board along with an application piece.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  • 1, 3, and -
    • translate word phrases into algebraic expressions.
    • interpret information from a story problem and utilize it to create an algebraic expression.
  • -
    • use prime factorization to find the GCF of two or more numbers greater than 10 and less than 100.
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete...
  • 1, 3, and -
    • Lesson 2.8 Practice B and Problem Solving or Challenge.
  •  -
    • Textbook page 84 - 1 through 7, 20, 30, and 38
    • Answer questions 11 - 16 on the Chapter Two pretest.
