Class Topics: 02.27.13

In Math Six today, students checked their Evening Practice from last night.  Once that was completed and Mr. Giomini clarified any final questions, students engaged in a Gallery Walk.  This activity allowed us to review material for the first five lessons from our current unit of study.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to..
  1. a pply problem-solving and decision-making.
  2. communicate mathematical ideas.
  3. use order of operations to simplify numerical expressions.
  4. use simple expressions involving integers.
  5. add, subtract, multiple and divide integers.
  6.  solve equations that have integers.
For Evening Practice, the student is assigned...
  1. the front side of his HANDOUT.
In Pre-Algebra today, students completed the Chapter Eight Midpoint Quiz.  Grades and comments will be posted later today.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. use problem-solving skills to answer questions that incorporate percents.
  2. incorporate equations or proportions to solve real-life problems involving percents.
For Evening Practice, the student is assigned...
  1. to answer the question posted to the blog.
Explain how it could be possible that a greater number of students walk to Learwood
even though a greater percent of students walk to Troy.

  1. There is a greater amount of kids at Learwood than Troy. Most of the kids at Troy walk to school but only half of the kids at Learwood walk to school.

  3. There is a larger amount of kids who attend Learwood then Troy. Most of the kids at Troy walk to school but the 50% of Learwood kids that walk to school is a bigger amount.

  10. The way learwood could have more students is if there could be a greater number of students at learwood than troy.

  12. Learwood has 50% of there students walk and Troy has 75% of there students walk. This means Learwood has more students then Troy does.

  13. Learwood could have more students than troy therefor the 50% > 70% because 50% may = 500 and the 70% could = 350.

  14. There could be more students at Learwood which would make the percent smaller because the denominator would be bigger than the Troy denominator, so that would make the percent smaller.

  16. There could be a greater number of kids who walk to Troy because maybe it is raining outside and the Learwood girls don't want their hair to get screwed up. Or maybe because there are less kids who live close to Learwood than there are at Troy. Another reason could be that it is snowing outside and the kids who walk to Troy don't really care but the kids who walk to Learwood do care. There are many more answers that I could type, but that would take forever.

  18. Though the percents would show that more people walk to Troy than to Learwood, the percents are only of the total number of people going there. If one hundred people go to Troy than 70 people walk, according to the information. If 200 people go to Learwood, then 100 people walk. It all depends on the total number of people that go to the school before you find the percentage.

  19. In Learwood there could be more kids than at Troy. If there were 100 kids at Learwood and 50 walk to school and in Troy there are 50 kids and 35 walk to school that makes the Learwood kids have 50% and the Troy kids have 70% but Learwood has more kids.

  24. There are more kids in learwood then there is in troy. So that means if Troy has less students then if only a little bit of kids walk that is a bigger % and if there alot of students at learwood and a lot of people walk there are also a llot of other kids doing other ways to get home. I dont really know how to explain it that good so that didnt make any sence.

  25. It could be possible that a greater number of students walk to Learwood even though a greater percent of students walk to Troy because more kids go to Learwood, but more kids live near Troy.
