Class Topics: 02.26.13

In Math Six today, students completed the last bit of material from our current unit of study: Lesson 2.9 - Scientific Notation.  This lesson is an extension from a lesson that we did during the first quarter.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. express large and small numbers in scientific notation.
  2. convert between standard and scientific notation.
For Evening Practice, the student is assigned one of the following based on the results from their Lesson Quiz:

In Pre-Algebra today, students discussed their Evening Practice with peers who completed a similar level from last night.  Once that was complete, students had 20 minutes to complete several story problems in the cafeteria with two colleagues.  These problems dealt with fractions, decimals and percents and were real-world applications of the skills that we have been practicing and assessing in class.  Mr. Giomini then modeled and discussed the questions with the class as a whole.
  • Emma bought a drill for 85% of its original price.  She paid $32.89 for the drill.  What was the original price of the drill?
  • Ryder took a friend out to lunch.  Once the bill came, he insisted on paying for the meal.  If Ryder wants to leave an 18% tip, how much will he have to pay in all if the cost of the meal was $56.89?

Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. convert between decimals, fractions and percents.
  2. find the specific percent of a number.
  3. calculate for a number when a percent is know.
For Evening Practice, the student is assigned....
  1. questions 1 - 17 on page 414.
