Class Topics: 02.25.13

In Math Six today, Mr. Giomini spent a little time catching up with Lesson 2.7 - Properties of Exponents to see what students recalled from last Thursday's lesson.  Mr. Giomini then introduced, modeled and assigned practice problems from Lesson 2.8 - Look for a Pattern in Integer Exponents.

During this lesson, students reviewed what it means to have a power of ten with a negative exponent and how that number is not less than zero, but rather less than one but greater than zero.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. evaluate powers of ten when negative exponents are used.
  2. evaluate the products and quotients of negative exponents.
For Evening Practice, the student is assigned one of the following based on their Lesson Quiz resuls...
In Pre-Algebra today, students worked with Lesson 8.3 - Finding a Number When a Percent is Know.  During this lesson, students worked with such problems as:
  • Anna earned 85% on a test by answering 17 questions correctly. If each question was worth the same amount, how many questions were on the test?
  • A fisherman caught a lobster that weighed 11.5 lb. This was 70% of the weight of the largest lobster that fisherman had ever caught. What was the weight, to the nearest tenth of a pound, of the largest lobster the fisherman had ever caught?
Mr. Giomini modeled how to use equations and proportions to solve these problems and ones similar to them.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. set-up an equation or proportion to solve a percent problem.
  2.  find the number when the percent is known.
For Evening Practice, the student is assigned one of the following based on their Lesson Quiz results...
  1. LI: answers question 1 - 16 on page 412.
  2. LII: answer questions 10 - 20 on page 412.
  3. LIII: answer questions 16 - 24 on pages 412 and 413.
