Class Topics: 02.22.13

In Math Six today, students worked with the Chapter Two Pre-Algebra Formative Pretest to make corrections. We treated this like an actual assessment and checked over our work so that errors could be analyzed.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. apply problem-solving and decision-making.
  2. communicate mathematical ideas.
  3. decompose and recompose whole numbers using factors and exponents and explain why "squared" means "second power" and "cubed" means "third power."
  4. simplify algebraic expressions by combining like terms.
  5. use simple expressions involving integers to represent and solve problems.
For Weekend Practice, the student is assigned...
  1. to review your notes from the past two weeks as well as any videos that were posted to the blog to prepare for Thursday's summative posttest.
In Pre-Algebra today, students were introduced to Lesson 8.2 - Finding Percents.  This lesson tied in nicely with the video that was posted to blog yesterday.  Problems such as the ones below were discussed, answered and modeled in class.
  • Eddie weighs 160 lb, and his bones weigh 24 lb.  Find the percent of his weight that his bones are.
  • Ms. Chang deposited $550 in the bank.  Four years later her account held 110% of the original amount. How much money did Ms. Chang have in the bank at the end of the four years?
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. find the percent of a given number.
  2. apply knowledge of finding percents to story problems and real-world applications.
For Weekend Practice, the student is assigned...
  1. questions 11-25 on pages 407 and 408
