Class Topics: 01.29.13

In Math Six today, students received their Unit Five Summative Posttest back and Mr. Giomini discussed the overall results.  Students then reviewed last night's Evening Practice which dealt with percent story problems.  Mr. Giomini took the class to the computer lab where students began working with the Khan Skills that correlate with our next topic of discussion: Unit Six: Number Systems and Algebra Concepts.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. identify and correct their mistakes on the Unit Five Summative Posttest.
  2. multiply fractions and reduce answers to simplest terms.
For Evening Practice, students are required to...
  1. answer the two questions posted below.
  2. complete, meaning being Proficient after at least one stack, the first two Khan Skills on the Unit Six hotlist.

The diameter of the penny is 0.75 inches.  Calculate the area and circumference of a penny.
A = 3.14 *radius * radius / C = 3.14 * diameter

Mr. Hartwell and Mr. Giomini are creating two dog pen's for Ms. Banjoff's backyard.  The design needs to cover 72 square feet.  What are the dimensions that will need to be used in order to make the cheapest two pens?  If fencing costs $55.00 per foot, what will the total cost be for the smaller of the two jobs?

In Pre-Algebra today, students charted and analyzed their Probe II results with Mr. Giomini.  The class average for first period was a 68% and the average for third period was a 78%.  Mr. Giomini then broke students up into groups to work with Chapter Seven material which served as front-loading for tomorrow's Unit Seven Formative Pretest.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. identify their mistakes from Probe II and understand the error in their reasoning.
  2. chart their results from Probe II.
  3. introduce themselves to some of the skills taught in Unit Seven.
For Evening Practice, it is required that students...
  1. complete Lesson 7.1 - Practice B. (Handout from Mr. Giomini)
