Class Topics: 01.16.13

In Math Six today, students reviewed the four problems that they had for Evening Practice which were posted to the blog.  Once students checked their work and made inquires if needed, Lesson 5.5: Transformations was wrapped up by completing Math Journal pages 180 and 181.

Students then progressed into Lesson 5.6: Congruent Figures.  A working definition for congruent was established which helped them to complete Study Link 5.6.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. identify congruent figures.
  2. use appropriate tools to construct congruent figures.
  3. draw similar shapes that model proportional relationships.
For Evening Practice, it is suggested that the student...
  1. complete Math Journal page 187.
  2. answer the questions pictured below either in your Math Quad Notebook or on a separate sheet of paper.

In  Pre-Algebra today, students reviewed last night's Evening Practice with Mr. Giomini to check for understanding.  Students then began their work with Lesson 6.8: Surface Area of Prisms and Cylinders, but they cannot forget their experiences with volume.  Mr. Giomini modeled how to calculate the surface area of prisms and cylinders and compared it to what the volume of those shapes provided us.  Students then collaborated with peers to solve some surface area problems.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. communicate mathematical ideas.
  2. understand and describe the difference between surface area and volume.
  3. develop a formula that can be used to calculate the surface area of a prisms and cylinders.
  4. apply the formula for finding surface area of prisms and cylinders to real-world applications.
For Evening Practice, it is suggested that the student...
