Class Topics: 01.15.13

In Math Six today, students reviewed their Evening Practice with Mr. Giomini which dealt with adding fractions with unlike denominators.  Students then finished up Lesson 5.4: Coordinate Geometry and finding midpoints of lines before moving into Lesson 5.5: Transformations.  During this lesson, students discussed the terms: translation, reflection, rotation and dilation.  Shapes were transformed on coordinate grids.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. plot, name and label points in any of the four quadrants of a coordinate grid.
  2. identify congruent figures.
  3. perform transformations with geometric figures.
  4. classify a rotation by the number of degrees needed to produce a given image.
For Evening Practice, it is suggested that the student...
  1. complete the four problems pictured below on a sheet of paper or in their Quad Notebook.

In Pre-Algebra today, students reviewed last night's Evening Practice dealing with the volume of prisms and cylinders.  Students then moved into Lesson 6.7: Volume of Pyramids and Cones.  Mr. Giomini modeled how the formula for a pyramid relates to that of a prism.  Students then completed some practice problems with a peer and finally completed a quick three problem quiz for the lesson.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. develop a formula that can be used to calculate the volume of a pyramid and cone.
  2. apply the formula for finding volume of pyramids and cones to real-world applications.
For Evening Practice, it is suggested that the student...
  1. answer questions 15 and 17 - 25 on pages 314 and 315.
