Day 18: Rational Numbers on a Number Line - Add and Subtract Integers

Today in Math 6 and Math 6+, students first began with discussing what types of numbers are rational. This lesson assumed that students had a firm understanding of converting fractions to decimals and comparing fractions with unlike denominators.

Mr. Giomini modeled strategies on how to compare two rational numbers such as 5/7 and 0.86 as well as how to determine which fraction is larger using common denominators. In small groups, students were given index cards with rational numbers and had to sort them from least to greatest. Either Mr. Giomini or a peer checked their work before they were allowed to rotate to another set or numbers to sort.

Once that was complete, students worked independently to complete their weekend practice. Mr. Giomini circulated the room to check on student progress.

In this lesson, students will be able to...
  • plot rational numbers on a number line.
  • compare and order rational numbers.
  • use rational numbers to represent real-world quantities.
Essential Understanding for Lesson 2.2 - Represent Rational Numbers on the Number Line
  • Each rational number can be associated with a unique point on the number line. A number to the right of another on the number line is the greater number.
