Day 45: Adding and Subtracting Postive and Negative Decimals / Topic Two Posttest / Equations with Fractions

Today in Math 6 - 1 & 3°, students built upon their knowledge of adding and subtracting integers from the previous weeks and began adding and subtracting positive and negative decimals.

During Math 6 - 2°, students completed the Topic Two posttest.

Mr. Giomini gave the students in Math 6+ a quick pre-test to see what students knew about solving equations with fractions that incorporated adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.  Once the task was graded, students were arranged into groups to work with problems in the area that they struggled with.  Mr. Giomini circulated the room and provided small group instruction for students.

At the conclusion of class, students then presented some of the problems that they solved to the class to help solidify their understanding of the concept.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation. (1 & 3°)
  2. understand solving an equation.  (2°)
  3. understand that a variable can represent an unknown number or any numbers in a specified set. (2°)
  4. use substitution to determine whether a given number in a specified set makes an equation true. (2°)
  5. interpret and compute quotients of fractions. (7°)
  6. solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions.  (7°)
  7. fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers using the standard algorithm for each operation. (all classes)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6 - 1 & 3: Page 12
  2. Math 6 - 2°:  Begin previewing new Khan Skills that Mr. Giomini assigned for Topic Three
  3. Math 6+: Digital handout - 1st Column and 41  (CLICK HERE)
  4. All Classes: > 10 minutes meaningful practice at Khan Academy
