Day 18: One-step Equations / Distributive Property / Equations with Variables on Both Sides

Today in Math 6, students in  and reviewed the quiz results from Friday's Socrative.  Mr. Giomini modeled how to use enVision's online tools to help with assessment preparation.  Students completed an 18 question review online to help solidify their understanding of solving equations dealing with multiplication and division.

During Math 6 - 2°, Mr. Giomini introduced Lesson 1.6: Write Equivalent Expressions.  Students were introduced to using properties to construct arguments about mathematics.  The goal was to create two equivalent expressions that stated the same thing only in different representations.  Pages 37, 38, and 39 were utilized to help bolster this knowledge.

Math 6+ students reviewed results from Friday's quiz.  Mr. Giomini displayed a box-and-whisker plot that organized assessment scores and discussed what the graphical representation showed.

Class then worked with equations that had variables on both sides of the equal sign.  Students had to develop a way to solve this type of equation and then present their reasoning to the class.  The remainder of the class time, students were allowed to work on their evening practice.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. understand solving an equation as a process of answering a question.  (1 and 3°)
  2. identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, coefficient.  (2°)
  3. view one or more parts of an expression as a single entity.  (2°)
  4. apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.  (2°)
    • 3(2 + x) = 6 + 3x
    • y + y + y = 3y
    • 24x + 18y = 6(4x + 3y)
  5. solve real-world and mathematical problems by writing and solving equations of the form        and px q for cases in which p, q and are all non-negative rational numbers. (7°)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6: 1.7 Independent Practice Buddy (online)
  2. Math 6 - 2°:  page 40 in the enVision workbook
  3. Math 6+:  Digital handout (odds)  (CLICK HERE)
