Class Topics: 03.26.13

In Math Six today, Mr. Giomini conferenced with students about their results on Probe IV.  Students also completed the Unit Eight Formative Pretest.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will demonstrate their current level of understanding when it comes to...
  1. applying the per-unit rate and rate-table methods to solve problems.
  2. using proportions to model, summarize and solve rate problems.
  3. understanding and implementing the cross product algorithm to write and solve open proportions.
  4. expressing ratios as fractions and percents.
  5. finding fractional equivalents or proportions to solve percent-of problems.
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to...
  1. complete Math Journal page 281.

In Pre-Algebra today, students reviewed last night's Evening Practice with each other and then shared out any concerns that they had that were not yet resolved.  Mr. Giomini then introduced, modeled and practiced with students problems from Lesson 9.7 - Independent and Dependent Events.
Some of the questions that were asked today include:
  • Dependent or Independent Events:
    • a football team winning two games in a row
    • drawing the names of two brothers out of a hat
    • drawing a red and then a green piece of candy from the same bag
    • rolling a pair of 6's on two number cubes and flipping two coins on heads
  • A drawer contains 10 black socks and 6 blue socks.  If 2 socks are chosen at random, what is the probability of getting a pair of socks that are the same color?
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. calculate the probabilities of dependent and independent events occurring.
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to...
  1. answer numbers 3 - 15, 17, 19 - 25 on pages 480 and 481.
