Class Topics: 09.19.12

In Math Six today, students completed their Unit Two Summative Pretest.  It is my hope that the percents on the pretest are a bit higher due to our front-loading over the course of the past two days.  This unit builds on student's conceptual understanding of place-value and whole-number operations to develop number sense and operational strategies for decimals.
Unit Two has five main areas of focus:
  1. to read, write and interpret numbers written in standard, number-and-word, expanded and scientific notation.
  2. to review adding and subtracting decimals.
  3. to develop power-of-ten-strategies.
  4. to estimate products and quotients of decimal numbers.
  5. to develop strategies for multiplying and dividing decimals.
Today's Learning Intentions: The student will be able to...
  1. exhibit their problem-solving skills by demonstrating perseverance on their Unit Two Pretest.
For Evening Practice, it is suggested that the student...

In Pre-Algebra today, students collaborated with peers to work on Lesson 2-4: Solving Equations Containing Integers.  This skill relies on our foundation of: 1.) Simplify 2.) Isolate 3.) Solve and 4.) Check.  All four operations are involved in this lesson.  Mr. Giomini started class with the story problem pictured below.
Today's Learning Intentions: The student will be able to...
  1. simplify equations by using the distributive property and combining like terms.
  2. isolate the variable to one side of the equation.
  3. solve the equation for the variable.
  4. check their solution to see if it works in the original equation.
For Evening Practice, it is suggested that the students...
