Class Topics: 05.14.12

In EDM today, students were presented with four review problems from last week to solve for a Quick Check.  These four problems were modeled and discussed by volunteers at the Active Board.
  • A computer game originally sold for $40 but is now on sale for 30% off.  What is the sale price of the computer game?
  • Barb has a grocery store in which she sells everything at 50% above the wholesale price.  If she purchased a case of yogurt for $30 wholesale, what will be the retail price?
  • What percent of 33 is 22?
  • The volume of Lake Superior is 2900 cubic meters and the volume of Lake Erie is 116 cubic meters.  What percent of the volume of Lake Superior is the volume of Lake Erie?
We then introduced Lesson 8.6: Applications of Percents.  Students began to calculate commission and total price of an item once sales tax is factored.
Today's Learning Intentions: The student will be able to...
  1. determine the specific percent of a number when given another number.
  2. calculate the percent change of an item's price.
  3. apply their knowledge of percents to real-world situations.
For Evening Practice, students CAN...
  1. use their new percent skills to complete Practice A in their Pre-Algebra handout.
  2. solve and explain their answer to the problem below in a blog post.
    • A real estate agent earned $9600 in commission in April.  If their commission is 8% of sales, how much were their sales in April?

In Pre-Algebra today, students began their final preparation for the Chapter Nine Summative Post-test.  Students collaborated with peers to discuss their Chapter Nine Formative Pre-test corrections as well as develop solutions to several review problems posted on the Active Board by Mr. Giomini.
Today's Learning Intentions: The student will be able to...
  1. communicate their solutions to various probability problems.
  2. collaborate with peers to discuss and validate each other's solutions.
For Evening Practice, students CAN...
  1. utilize their Chapter Nine Formative Pre-test to study for tomorrow's Chapter Nine Summative Post-test.
  2. review Guided Notes from Chapter Nine.

  2. The amount of sales in April was $8,832.00 dollars.I found my answer by multiplying 9,600 by 0.08 (8%) and then I got 768. Lastly I subtracted $9,600-$768= $8,832.00 dollars.

  3. Q: A real estate agent earned $9600 in commission in April. If their commission is 8% of sales, how much were their sales in April?

A: 107500 is the answer i came up with. I came up with this answer by: Dividing 9600/.08 to get 107500. 107500 is my final answer.

  5. Mr. Giomini,
I got the answer of $88,320. I got this answer by multiplying $9600 and 0.08 (8%) and got 7,680. Then i subtracted that 7,680 and 9,600 to get a final answer of $88,320.

  6. Mr Giomini,
The answer to this question is 120,000. I got this answer by setting up the proportion shown below...

    9600 8
    ----- = ----
    x 100

Then I solved the proportion and got 120,000.

  7. Hi Mr. Giomini,
For my answer I got $8,832. I got my answer by first multiplyng 9,600 x 0.08, to get an answer of 768. I then did 9,600 - 768 to get a final answer of $8,832.

  9. Dear Mr. Giomini,

The answer I got was 120,000 because I set up a proportion and put 8 over 100 and 9600 over a w because I didn't have another number for the bottom. I multiplied 9600 and 100 then divided 960000 by 8 and got 120,000.

  18. Mr.Giomini,

For my answer, he got $768 in April. This is true because he earned $9600, but he only gets 8%. So i did $9600*8%=$768.

  19. I got the answer of $10,368. I found this answer by, first, multiplying 9,600 and the deccimal of 8%, 0.08. I then got the answer of $768. You might think to stop there, but there is still one more step to this problem. Lastly, you must add the commission of 9,600 to 768 to get the final outcome of $10,368.

  28. Hey Mr. Giomini,
I got a answer of 120,000. to get this i set up a porportion having 9600 over "x" and 8 over 100. Since all percents are out of 100. I cross producted to 9600 x 100 to get 960000 then you divide that by 8. That gives you 120000.

  29. Mr.Giomini,
The amount of sales in April were $8832.00. Here are the steps of how I got my answer.

    1-9600*0.08=768
    2-9600-768=8832
The reason I subtracted 768 from 9600 is because 768 is just the discount, and not the sales.

  39. I got the answer of 120000. Well at first I was confused but then I read the question again, and I heard the commission is (or =) 8% of the sales which we don't know what the sales is. So I did the commission which is 9600/0.08(or 8%)and that equals 120000. The way I checked this was by multiplying 0.08 * 120000= 9600
