Class Topics: 02.23.12

In EDM today, students slowed it down a little and reviewed solving one and two step equations.  Once they exhibited some mastery in that skill, they began solving and graphing algebraic inequalities.  All of these skills are assessed on our Unit Six Summative Assessment that will begin on Tuesday, March 6.  Begin to look for specific videos modeling Unit Six Formative Pretest questions on the blog that a majority of the students struggled with in class.

In Pre-Algebra today, students reviewed their Chapter Six Summative Assessments.  The class average was a 90% which is something to celebrate.  Afterwards, we discussed homework questions from last night and began investigating Lesson 7.3: Analyze Units.  During this lesson we introduced conversion factor - the practice of converting units by multiplying by one or more rations of equal quantities.  An example would be convert inches to feet with the ratio: 1 ft:12 in.

We then began to apply this new knowledge to some real-world problems such as the following:
  • Sydney drives her car 23,000 miles per year.  Find the number of miles she drives her month.
  • A car traveled 60 miles on a road in 2 hours.  How many feet per second was the car traveling?
In class, students...
  • received their Chapter Six Summative Post-test.
  • applied their new knowledge of analyzing units to solve real-world problems.

The  speed of light is 299,792,458 m / s.
If you could travel at the speed of light,
how far will you have traveled in
one hour?

  1. For the speed of light question you'd go about 83275.68277777777 and so on with the sevens per hour

  2. I am still completely lost on the whole unit conversion stuff. I can't even watch the video again because my mind will just completely blow up.\
