Class Topic: 09.28.11

In EDM today, we discussed Multiplying by Powers of 10 and introduced positive and negative exponents.  Referring to the chart below helped us locate where decimals should be placed when multiplying by powers of 10 when using positive and negative exponents.

A pattern was identified: when the power of 10's exponent is positive, the number being multiplied by the power of 10 moves its decimal place to the right.  When the power of 10's exponent is negative, the number being multiplied by the power of 10 moves its decimal to the left.  We thought + to the right, - to the left.

In Pre-Algebra today, we reviewed for our quiz tomorrow by playing Jeopardy.  Skills that were reviewed were:

  • Addition and subtraction with positive and negative integers:
    • -9 + (-7)     9 - 11     15 - (-1)
  • Multiplication and division with positive and negative integers:
    • 108/-9     (-12)(-4)
  • Solving one-step equations that incorporate positive and negative integers:
    • 6 + t = -7     z - 8 = 25     m/5 = -5     81h = 9
  • Solving one-step inequalities that incorporate positive and negative integers:
    • 5g = 125     -27/u = 3

  1. I think your middle table (with all the notations) is great. I posted it on my blog, too. Thanks!
