Class Topics: 09.29.11

In EDM today, we reviewed how to multiply decimal numbers by incorporating more digits into the factors. A strategy that we are utilizing is to estimate a product first so that we have a "ball park" answer and then going through with the calculations.  This helps in two ways: one, we become better with rounding and estimation, and two, it gives us some direction as to how to review our answer as being either good or bad in relationship to our estimate.

We also solved some Power of 10 calculations using both positive and negative exponents.  Unfortunately, I cannot incorporate exponents into this format, but try these at home:
  1. 10 to what power x 3.5 = 3,500
  2. 0.456 x 10 to what power = 0.000456
  3. 10 to what power x 9.234 = 92,340

In Pre-Algebra, we completed a ten question quiz that dealt with the following:
  • Adding and Subtracting Integers
  • Simplifying, Isolating, Solving, and Checking Equations that Include Integers
  • Simplifying, Isolating, Solving, Checking, and Graphing Inequalities that Include Integer
