Today in Math 6: 1 & 3°, students were introduced to how they could calculate a tip for a dinner at a local restaurant. Class talked about the application of this skill beyond going out to dinner. There is a Khan skill that has a strong correlation with today's lesson.
During Math 6 - 2°, students continued their work with Lesson 6.4: Evaluating Expressions from the past two days. The class was separated into two groups. One group continued to work on their skills with evaluating algebraic expressions relying heavily on their multiplication and division. A second group worked on a performance based task which tied the topic skills together in a real-life application.
Students in Math 6+ were introduced to the idea of percent increase and decrease. Mr. Giomini modeled a formula that works when calculating the percent change when working with two numbers. The challenge was to determine the intuition as to why the formula works.
Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
- use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. (1&3°)
- fluently divide multi-digit numbers. (2°)
- evaluate expressions at specific values. (2°)
- calculate percent increase and decrease. (7°)
