Day 70: Equivalent Ratios / Independent and Dependent Variables / Proportions Extension

Today in Math 6: 1 & 3°, students continued their work with ratios.  Basic proportions were introduced by attempting to determine if two ratios were equivalent.

Mr. Giomini modeled how to construct a proportion and provided the students with a framework for arranging information appropriately.

During Math 6 - 2°, students pasted independent and dependent events into their notebooks to help them understand the concept more thoroughly.  Students made an illustration to show their real-world independent and dependent event relationship.
Students in Math 6+ discussed their work from last night to ensure that everyone understood how to write and solve proportions from information provided.

Mr. Giomini then had students work briefly in pairs to work through some real-world problems that were solved by writing and solving proportions.  Once time expired, students shared and discussed their work with another group.  Units conversions was then introduced and practiced to conclude class.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. understand the concept of a ratio. (1, 3, and 7°)
  2. use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. (1,3, and 7°)
  3. use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems. (7°)
  4. analyze the relationship between dependent and independent variables. (2°)
  5. fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers using the standard algorithm for each operation. (all classes)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6(1&3°): Page 13 and 23
  2. Math 6(2°): Page 230
  3. Math 6+: Page 64 (all)
  4. All Classes: > 10 minutes meaningful practice at Khan Academy
