Day 46: Multiplying Decimals / Integers / Multiplying Mixed Numbers - Cross Reducing

Today in Math 6: 1 & 3°, students completed a Quick Check dealing with adding and subtracting positive and negative decimals.  This is a skill that was worked on in class on Friday as well as practiced over the weekend.

Mr. Giomini then had students work with multiplying decimals where both factors had a decimal.  This then led into working with equations where multiplying decimals was needed in order to solve for the variable.

During Math 6 - 2°, students reviewed their Topic Two: Solve Equations and Inequalities posttest from Friday.  The class average was an 82% which was strong for a topic that covered a great deal of new content.

Mr. Giomini then introduced Topic Three: Rational Numbers.  The first lesson worked with defining and understanding integers.  Students learned that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite values.

Students in Math 6+ reviewed the equation work from last Friday dealing with fractions.  Mr. Giomini then modeled how to multiply mixed numbers and fractions which is actually a precursor to dividing fractions which students worked with last week.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation. (1 & 3°)
  2. understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values. (2°)
  3. use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts. (2°)
  4. solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions.  (7°)
  5. fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers using the standard algorithm for each operation. (all classes)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6 - 1 & 3: Pages 9 and 11
  2. Math 6 - 2°:  Pages 145 and 146
  3. Math 6+: Pages 24 and 25
  4. All Classes: > 10 minutes meaningful practice at Khan Academy
