Class Topics: 04.25.13

In Math Six today, students began class by completing a quick review problem using a proportion.  Mr. Giomini then introduced Lesson 8.6 - Ratios.  In cooperative pairs, students collaborated to complete Math Journal pages 300 - 303.  To end the class period, Mr. Giomini assigned a review question to see students' level of comprehension of today's material.

1. apply multiplication and division facts to find equivalent fractions.
2. express ratios in words, as fractions and with colons.
3. use proportions to model and solve ratio number stories.
4. write an open sentence from cross products.
5. use a a method to solve equations.

1. Math Journal pages 300 and 302.

In Pre-Algebra today, students reviewed solving equations with variables on both sides and how to eliminate fractions to simplify the process.  Mr. Giomini introduced and modeled the final part of Chapter Ten, Lesson 10.6 - Systems of Equations.  This idea of a system of equations is new to students so some definitions are posted below.  

• A system of equations is a set of two or more equations that contain two or more variables.
• A solution of a system of equations is a set of values that are solutions of all of the equations. If the system has two variables, the solutions can be written as ordered pairs.

The foundation of this lesson is grounded in material from Chapter One which was revisited to establish the foundation that students currently possess.
