Class Topics: 02.05.13

In Math Six today during Second Period, students began Unit Six - Lesson 6.1: Multiplication of Fractions and Mixed Numbers.  During this lesson, students were introduced to how to multiply fractions and based on their current level of comfort: Level I = Not confident, Level II = Good, but need some guidance and Level III = Great, I can do these independently, students were divided into four groups to complete Math Journal pages 205.

Students then continued onto Math Journal page 206 to work with the Reciprocal Property.

1. use an algorithm to multiply fractions and mixed numbers.
2. write a special case to illustrate a general pattern.
3. define and find the reciprocal of a number.

1. answer the question posted below.

Your parents decide to give you an allowance.  In January you receive $2.00. February sees you earn $4.00 and then in March it becomes $8.00. Once April arrives, you make $16.00.  If this increase continues, how much money will you have by the end of the year?

In Math Six today during Fourth Period, students were introduced to Lesson 6.2 - Division of Fractions and Mixed Numbers.  Mr. Giomini modeled why the reciprocal property is used when dividing fractions.  Students worked with Mr. Giomini to complete Math Journal page 208.  While working on Math Journal page 209, Mr. Giomini divided the class up into learning pods and worked with a group of students himself.

1. use the division of fractions algorithm to divide fractions and mixed numbers.
2. measure line segments to the nearest one-eighth inch.
3. apply the concept of a reciprocal.

In Pre-Algebra today, Mr. Giomini reviewed common questions from Evening Practice.  Once that was complete, students began Lesson 7.4 - Solving Proportions.  During this lesson, students used cross products to identify proportions and applied that knowledge the story problems such as the one listed below.

Jo weighs 65 lb and Tim weighs 78 lbs.  If Tim is seated 6 ft from the center of a balanced seesaw, how far is Jo seated from the center?

1. explain what the cross products of two ratios represent.
2. tell what it means if the cross products are not equal.
3. solve proportions.
