Class Topics: 01.31.13

In Math Six today during second period, students completed Probe II.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. interpret data on two graphical representations.
  2. use prime factorization.
  3. understand the meaning of constant rate.
  4. determine the unit price and total cost of a purchase.
  5. simplify an expression using order of operation.
In Math Six today during fourth period, students began Unit Six - Numbers Systems and Algebra Concepts.  Students reviewed and discussed last night's Evening Practice focusing on converting fractions to percents and improper fractions.  Mr. Giomini then introduced Lesson 6.1 - Multiplication of Fractions and Mixed Numbers.  Math Journal pages 205 and 206 were completed to help review the concept and also to introduce the Reciprocal Property.

  1. use an algorithm to multiply fractions and mixed numbers.
  2. reduce answer to simplest terms.
  3. define and find the reciprocal of a number.
For Evening Practice, it is required that students...
  1. answer the questions pictured below.
  2. complete the first two Khan Skills for Unit Six.



In Pre-Algebra today, students reviewed Lesson 7.1 - Ratios and Proportions.  Students developed a working definition for the terms: ratio, equivalent ratio, and proportion.  The previous night's Evening Practice was discussed.  Lesson 7.2 - Ratios, Rates and Unit Rates was introduced.  Mr. Giomini presented the students with examples such as:

Choose the quantity that has a lower unit price: 6 oz for $1.29 or 15 oz for $3.00. 
Justify your reasoning with calculations.

A wide-screen television has a width of 32 in. and a height of 18 in.
What is the aspect ratio of this screen?
