Day Twelve: Dividing Mixed Numbers

Today in Math 6 students completed a quick five question quiz dealing with dividing fractions by fractions. Scores should be entered into PowerSchool by the end of the school day.

Lesson 1.6: Divide Mixed Numbers was introduced, modeled, and practiced in class. Mr. Giomini modeled how to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions and then multiplied the dividend by the divisor's reciprocal. This lesson took what we had been doing in previous topics and stretched the concepts by implementing mixed numbers for both the dividend and divisor.

Estimation was utilized to help provide students with a ballpark answer which allowed them to have something to check their precise answer against.

Students in Math 6+ worked with Lesson 1.6: Divide Mixed Numbers. This topic was touched upon yesterday and the students appeared fluent. To help stretch the concept, Mr. Giomini implemented positive and negative mixed numbers along with application based problems.

Essential understanding for Lesson 1.6:
  • The quotient of mixed numbers can be found by writing the mixed numbers as improper fractions and multiplying the dividend by the divisor's reciprocal.
  • Estimate and multiply to check answers.
In this lesson, students will be able to...
  • divide a whole number by a mixed number and a mixed number by a whole number.
  • divide a mixed number by a mixed number.
