Day Two: Fluently Add, Subtract, and Multiply Decimals

Today in Math 6 and Math 6+, students worked off the summer rust by adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals using visual models and standard algorithms. This lesson emphasized a blend of procedural skill, fluency, and application. Students constructed models similar to the one shown in the video below to visually demonstrate calculating the product of two decimals.

Essential understanding for Lesson 1.1:
  • Algorithms can be used to add, subtract, and multiply decimals fluently.
In this lesson, students will be able to...
  • use a model and an algorithm to add, subtract, and multiply decimals.
  • use estimation to determine whether an answer is reasonable.
For evening practice the student is expected to...
  • complete page 12 in the enVision workbook. (Math 6)
  • complete 1.1 Enrichment handout from Mr. Giomini. (Math 6+)

  1. Hey everyone this is Ethan Danniger, and if you don't know me it's because I'm at Learwood. But I just wanted to say to the new 6th graders that a great year is ahead of you. You got very lucky and got the best math teacher at troy. To be honest, I never really liked math, but Mr. Giomini made me look forward to stepping into his class. Just thought i'd give this note because I saw this page in my bookmarks and wanted to enjoy a little throwback.

    From everyone's favorite student,
    Ethan Danniger
