Day Four: Multiplying Fractions

Today in Math 6 and Math 6+, students worked with Lesson 1.3: Multiplying Fractions. Mr. Giomini began the lesson with the question pictured below.


This example provided the students with a visual model for what multiplying two fractions looks like in an attempt to make things more concrete. Other examples were utilized to help understand the algorithm for multiplying fractions.

Students were encouraged to use cross reduction when multiplying fractions to help with simplifying answers.

Essential understanding for Lesson 1.3:
  • Visual models like area models and number lines can be used to multiply fractions. 
In this lesson, students will be able to...
  • multiply fractions and apply those skills to multiply mixed numbers.
