Day 137: Plane Geometry / Mean (Average)

Today in Math 6 during 1 and 3°, students applied the skills that they have practiced with plane geometry. Students looked for and made use of the structure of polygons and the coordinate plane to solve real-world problems.

In Math 6 during 2°, students began Topic 15.2: Mean.  Students were introduced to measures of center. The lesson relied on the student's ability to fluently add and divide whole numbers.

Math 6+ students worked with polygons on the coordinate plane to determine the area of various two-dimensional shapes.  Students had to look for and use the structure of polygons to solve problems when geometric figures are placed on the coordinate plane.

Today's Learning Targets: The student will be able to...
  • recognize that a measure of center for a numerical data set summarizes all of its values with a single number, while a measure of variation describes how its values vary with a single number. (2°)
  • find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes. (1, 3 and 7°)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to...
  • 1 & 3° -
    • Complete page 692.
    • Have 100% of 6th Grade Khan Skills mastered by May 27th.
  • 2° -
    • Complete page 758.
    • Have 100% of 6th Grade Khan Skills mastered by May 27th.
  • 7° -
    • Complete page 686.
    • Have 100% of 7th Grade Khan Skills mastered by May 27th.
  • All Classes: Complete at least 10 minutes of work on Khan Academy to help review old content, practice new material, or front-load future concepts.
