Day 133: Area of Irregular Polygons / Percents and Review / Circles

Today in Math 6 during 1 and 3°, students worked with decomposing and composing shapes when calculating the area for different polygons.  In order to be successful, students need to exhibit fluency with the formulas that we have worked with in class as well and with multiplication.

In Math 6 today during 2°, students either worked with percentages or converting between metric and customary measurement depending on last week's assessment results.

Math 6+ students worked with a seventh grade indicator today when calculating for the area and circumference of circles.  Mr. Giomini discussed why using pi, rather than multiplying by 3.14, gives a more precise answer.

Students also measured different circles to see if they could uncover how all circles are related.

Today's Learning Targets: The student will be able to...
  • find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100. (2°)
  • solve problems involving finding the whole number, given a part and the percent. (2°)
  • find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes. (1 and 3°)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to...
  • 1 & 3° -
    • Complete page 679 and 680.
    • Have 75% of 6th Grade Khan Skills mastered by March 23rd.
  • 2° -
    • Complete the handout from Mr. Giomini.
    • Have 75% of 6th Grade Khan Skills mastered by March 23rd.
  • 7° -
    • Complete page 39.
    • Have 50% of 7th Grade Khan Skills mastered by March 23rd.
  • All Classes: Complete at least 10 minutes of work on Khan Academy to help review old content, practice new material, or front-load future concepts.
