Day 25: Scholastic Magazine / Formulas

Today in Math 6 and Math 6+ students did a quick number sort where they had to group numbers according to the number being rational or irrational.  A definition was not provided for rational and irrational; the students, working in pairs, had to come up with their own.  This sort is posted in class and will be visited later in the future.

Students then discussed the article from last night dealing with firefighting.  Mr. Giomini had students share out what they attained from the article.  A map was shown that illustrated the current wild fires actively burning through the country.

Using the article, students completed a Google Form that incorporated mathematics and literature.

During Math 6 - 2°, Mr. Giomini introduced Lesson 1.9: Formulas.  This lesson focused on students being able to substitute values into formula to calculate surface area, volume, perimeter, or area of geometric figures.  It ties in with the theme of evaluating algebraic expressions and order of operations that has run through each lesson to this point.  We continue to work on building fluency with our math facts which is vital to us being successful in mathematics.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. simplify algebraic expressions by combining like terms.  (2°)
  2. apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.  (2°)
  3. evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables.  (2°)
  4. write and evaluate algebraic expressions.  (1, 3, and 7°)
  5. fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers using the standard algorithm for each operation. (all classes)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6 - 1 & 3: Google Form (CLICK HERE)
  2. Math 6 - 2°:  page 58 in enVision workbook
  3. Math 6+:  Google Form (CLICK HERE)
