Day 21: Translating Expressions / Combining Like Terms / Distributive Property

Today in Math 6, students in  and 3° reviewed the work from last night's evening practice. Students reviewed how to translate word phrases into algebraic expressions.  Mr. Giomini paired students up to work on a matching activity dealing with translating word phrases.  Towards the end of class, time was given to begin evening practice.

During Math 6 - 2°, Mr. Giomini reviewed last night's homework from Lesson 1.7: Simplifying Expressions. Students played a game with a partner that dealt with combining like terms.

Math 6+ students worked with evaluating algebraic expressions using an online resource that Mr. Giomini modeled for the students.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. write expressions that record operations with numbers and letters standing for numbers. (1 and 3°)
  2. identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, coefficient.  (2°)
  3. simplify algebraic expressions by combining like terms.  (2°)
  4. apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.  (2°)
  5. write and evaluate numerical expression involving whole-number exponents. (7°)
  6. evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables.
  7. fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers using the standard algorithm for each operation. (all classes)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6 - 1 & 3: Practice Buddy 1.3
  2. Math 6 - 2°:  Pages 47 and 48
  3. Math 6+:  Practice Buddy 1.5
