Day 14: Substitution/Evaluating Algebraic Expressions/Multistep Equations

Today in Math 6, students in  and began work with algebraic equations.   This lesson's focus was determining whether a given solution made an equation true or false.  Later in the week students are going to solve equations and this lesson helps provide the foundation.

During Math 6 - 2°, were introduced to Lesson 1.5: Evaluate Algebraic Expressions.  Mrs. Long substituted values into algebraic expressions similar to the image below to evaluate the expression using order of operations.

Math 6+ students began work with solving single and multistep equations.  Our work with combining like terms and the distributive property from last week provided the groundwork for today's activities.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables.  (2 period)
  2. understand solving an equation or inequality as a process of answering a question: which values from a specified set, it any, make the equation of inequality true? (1, 3, and 7 period)
  3. use substitution to determine whether a given number makes an equation or inequality true. (1, 3, and 7 period)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6: Page 40 and 41
  2. Math 6 - 2°: Khan Skill: Evaluating expressions with one variable
  3. Math 6+: Page 40 and 41
