Class Topics: 09.30.13

In Common Core Math Six today, students in 1, 3, and reviewed combing like terms from the previous Friday.  Once that was completed, Mr. Giomini introduced and had students work with Lesson 2.10: Equations and Their Solutions.  During this lesson, students were introduced to the terms equation and solution.  Problems such as the one below were discussed and solved:

Stephen wants to buy a new snowboard for Mr. Giomini.  He currently has $119, which is $56 less than he needs.  Write an algebraic equation to help determine how much money Stephen still needs in order to purchase the snowboard for Mr. Giomini.
Students in reviewed GCF and LCM before progressing to Lesson 2.7: Variables and Algebraic Expressions. In this lesson, students learned about the terms: variable, constant, algebraic expression, and evaluate.  Mr. Giomini modeled problems such as the ones listed below:
  • n/2 + n for n = 4
  • Bella has n quarters.  You can use the expression 0.25n to find the total value of her coins.  What is the value of 18 quarters?
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  • 1, 3, and :
    • determine whether a number is a solution of an equation.
  • :
    • substitute a given value into an expression.
    • evaluate an expression for a given value.
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete...
  • :
    • textbook page 94: 1- 9, 18, 29, and 30.
