Class Topics: 04.09.13

In Math Six today, students reviewed last night's Evening Practice by checking their work against Mr. Giomini's.  If there were further questions, Mr. Giomini clarified them for the class.  Students then moved into Lesson 8.3: Solving Proportions by Cross Multiplication.  Examples were provided by Mr. Giomini using story problems such as the one listed below.  Learning groups were formed to complete Math Journal page 286.
  • If a 6 ft tall tent casts a 10 ft long shadow then how long is the shadow that a 9 ft tall adult elephant casts?
  • Find the distance between Mount Pleasant and Madison on a map with a scale of 1 cm : 14 km if they are actually 98 km apart.
For a grade, students independently completed Math Journal page 288.  Answers were discussed as a class and students were encouraged to record the correct answers once explanations were completed.

Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to...
  1. multiply and divide facts to find cross products.
  2. multiply whole or decimal numbers.
  3. use cross products to write algebraic equations.
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to...
  1. complete Math Journal page 287 and 289.
In Pre-Algebra today, students discussed page one from their Spring Break packet before completing the Chapter Ten Formative Pretest.
Today's Learning Goals: The student will be able to show what they know about...
  1. solving one-step equations and inequalities.
  2. solving equations with variables on both sides of the equation.
  3. solve two-step inequalities and graph the solutions.
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to...
  1. answer questions 1 - 14 on page 500.
  2. complete the following Khan skill if you are interested in a retake:
