Class Topics: 09.25.12

In Math Six today, students reviewed Lesson 2.4: Multiplying by Powers of 10 with Mr. Giomini by viewing the video posted below.  Once that was complete, class began Lesson 2.5: Multiplication of Decimals.  This lesson focused on first estimating a product and then developing an algorithm to check the estimate.
Today's Learning Intentions: The student will be able to...
  1. estimate the product of a decimal and a power of 10.
  2. see patterns in powers of 10 both with positive and negative numbers.
  3. develop an estimation strategy for multiplying decimals.
For Evening Practice, it is suggested that the student...
  1. complete Math Box 2.5.
  2. complete Google Form.  CLICK HERE!!!

In Pre-Algebra today, students received their Chapter Two Mid-point Quiz if they completed it yesterday.  Once that was discussed, Lesson 2-6: Exponents was introduced by Mr. Giomini with the following problem: Bacteria can divide every 20 minutes, so one bacterium can multiply to 2 in 20 minutes, 4 in 40 minutes, 8 in 1 hour, and so on.  How many bacteria will there be in 6 hours?  Write your answer using exponents and then evaluate.
Just some friendly bacteria.
Today's Learning Intentions: The student will be able to...
  1. evaluate expressions with exponents.
  2. communicate with peers using appropriate mathematical language.
For Evening Practice, it is suggested that the student...
  1. complete pages 86 and 87: numbers 14 through 50 even, 53, 54 (both parts) and 58 - 64.
