Class Topics: 03.19.12

In EDM today, students conferenced with Mr. Giomini to discuss their performance on Probe II from last week.  While Mr. Giomini was conferencing, students practiced several skills on the computer using Khan Academy.
Today's Learning Intentions:  The students will be able to...
  1. solve simple probability experiments.
  2. convert percents to decimals.
  3. convert decimals to percents.
For Evening Practice, students CAN...
  1. view the Probability video on Khan.
  2. practice Khan Probability exercise.
  3. practice Khan: Percents to Decimals.
  4. practice Khan: Decimals to Percents.
  5. post an answer to the question below.
    • A jar contains 16 black, 13 blue, and 9 purple marbles. If a marble is drawn at random, what is the probability of the marble not being blue?

In Pre-Algebra today, students completed their Chapter Seven Summative Assessment.  This is the last major grade for the students in the third quarter.
Today's Learning Intentions:  The students will be able to...
  1. apply and adapt problem-solving situations and identify potential solutions.
  2. use proportional reasoning and ratios to represent problem situations and determine the reasonableness of solutions.
  3. convert unlike units of measure to solve rate story problems.
Fro Evening Practice, students SHOULD...
  1. complete any missing Khan Links from the last three weeks before the quarter closes.

  6. The probability is 29/38. I got this by first adding all three of the numbers together to get the whole. Then, since you had to find out what it was without blue, I added 16 by 13 to get 29. 29/38.

  7. HEY MR GIOMINI I ADDED ALL THE MARBLES TOGETHER AND GOT 38 I PUT THAT FOR MY DENOMINATER. FOR MY NUMERATER I KNEW THAT THERE WAS 13 BLUES SO I PUT THAT FOR MY DENOMINATOR.

  16. Hi Mr. Giomini! The answer to the question above is 25/38 because if you add all of those numbers together you get 38 and if you just add 16+9 you will get 25.The fraction can not be reduced

  24. The probability of not choosing a blue marble is 25/38 because if you add all of the marbles up ( 16, 13, and 9 ) you get 38 and if you subtract 13 ( because that is the number of blue marbles in the jar ) you get 25 so you get 25/38.

  28. Mr. Giomini,

The probability that that the marble drawn will NOT be blue is 25/38. I got this answer by first adding 16 + 13 + 9 = 38. Then I took the number of blue marbles (13) and subtracted that from 38. After that I got 28. Finally I found my final answer of 25/38.

  39. The probibility of you picking 16 black and 9 purple ones would be 25/38. 16+9=25 16+13+9=38 marbles total. 25/38 cannot be reduced therefore the answer is 25/38 without picking any green marbles.(38-25=13) for 13 green marbles.

  42. Mr. Giomini,
I got an answer of 25/38 because if there is 13 marbles out of the total 38 marbles then you would subtract the 13 from 38 and you get 25. Then you must make that a fraction so it would 25/38.

I got 25/38 as my answer. I got the denominator 38 by adding 16+13+9 and got the denominator of 38. Also the way I got 25 as the numerator is by subtracting 38 by 13 (blue) and got the numerator of 25.
