Day Eleven: Dividing Fractions by Fractions

Students in Math 6 today began class by completing their Calculations Quiz #2. Once this was completed, Mr. Giomini worked with more visual models for dividing a fraction by a fraction. The goal is to provide students with a foundational understanding of why we multiply and use the reciprocal when dividing fractions.

Math 6+ students were administered and completed their Calculations Quiz #2 today at the beginning of class. Students then continued their work from yesterday with dividing fractions.  Mr. Giomini assigned the class a Khan skill to work on with dividing fraction word problems to help with the applicaiton piece.

Standard(s) addressed in today's lesson:
  • 6.NS.A.1: Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, create a story context for (2/3) ÷ (3/4) and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient; use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (2/3) ÷ (3/4) = 8/9 because 3/4 of 8/9 is 2/3. (In general, (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = ad/bc.)
