Day 115: Box-and-Whisker / Unit Rates / Mean Absolute Deviation

Today in Math 6: 1 & 3°, students continued their work from yesterday with box-and-whisker plots. To help make the data more authentic, students ran once around the bus loop as a peer timed them. Data was collected and shared in class.  Independently, students constructed a box-and-whisker plot from the collected data.

During Math 6 - 2°, students reviewed last night's evening practice by comparing their answers with an answer key provided by Mr. Giomini.

Students then began Lesson 10.2: Understand Unit Rates.  In this lesson, students learn that a unit rate is a special rate that compares a quantity to one unit of another quantity.

Math 6+ students worked with understanding and calculating MAD(Mean Absolute Deviation) and IQR(Interquartile Range).

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems. (2°)
  2. describe any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the context in which the data were gathered. (1, 3, and 7°)
  3. display numerical data sets on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots. (1 and 3°)
  4. give quantitative measures of center (median and/or mean) and variability (IQR and/or MAD) as well as describing any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the context in which the data were gathered. (7°)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6(1&3°):
    • Complete 16.2 Practice Buddy (online).
    • Work towards 75% mastery on Khan Academy (6th Grade)
  2. Math 6(2°):
    • Complete page 485 - even.
    • Work towards 75% mastery on Khan Academy (6th Grade)
  3. Math 6+:
    • Complete Measures of Variability Quick Check.
    • Work towards 50% mastery on Khan Academy (7th Grade)
  4. All Classes: > 10 minutes meaningful practice at Khan Academy
