Day 91: Percents, Fractions, and Decimals / Evaluate Expressions / Tips and Commission

Today in Math 6: 1 & 3°, students began Concept Five: Percents.  Mr. Giomini and the students discussed where they can find or use percents on a daily basis to help generate prior knowledge.  A Brain Pop video was shown to help demonstrate the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents.

Students utilized a Gizmo titled "Percents, Fractions, and Decimals" which allowed them to digitally work with the concepts in greater detail.

During Math 6 - 2°, students began Lesson 6.4: Evaluate Expressions.  This lesson brings us back to Topic One from late August and early September.  The difference now being that students apply their new knowledge with division and evaluate formulas for density, speed, and unit rates that require division.

Students in Math 6+ briefly reviewed finding the percent of a number using either an equation or a proportion. Mr. Giomini asked the students if any of them had gone out to dinner over the long weekend.  The discussion led to the question, "How do your parents calculate a tip?" for the server.  Students were asked to use previous algorithms or new self-taught ones to determine tips and commission.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. determine a relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents. (1 & 3°)
  2. fluently divide multi-digit numbers. (2°)
  3. evaluate expressions at specific values. (2°)
  4. find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100.  (7°)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
