Day 15: Solving One-Step Equations/Evaluating Algebraic Expressions/Writing Algebraic Equations

Today in Math 6, students in  and 3° began work with solving algebraic equations.  Mr. Giomini spoke about inverse operations and balancing equations.  Students also worked with substituting solutions into the original equation to check answers.

During Math 6 - 2°, continued their work with Lesson 1.5: Evaluate Algebraic Expressions.  Students played a game called "Displaying the Digits."

Math 6+ students continued their work with solving multistep equations.  The stretch for today's lesson was for students to read a story problem and write, then solve, an algebraic equation based on the information for the given scenario.

Today's Learning Target(s): The student will be able to...
  1. understand solving an equation or inequality as a process of answering a question.  (1 and 3°)
  2. use substitution to determine whether a given number in a specified set makes an equation or inequality true.  (1 and 3°)
  3. evaluate expressions at specific values for their variables.  (2°)
  4. solve real-world and mathematical problems by writing and solving equations of the form        x + p = q and px = q for cases in which p, q and x are all non-negative rational numbers. (7°)
For Evening Practice, the student is expected to complete:
  1. Math 6: Page 45 and 46.
  2. Math 6 - 2°: Page 34.
  3. Math 6+: Digital handout.  (CLICK HERE)
